One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that began in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
