An individual who spiked candy with sedative and gave them to children at a summer program in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two children both nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight youngsters and a grown-up experienced illness at the location in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a multiple criminal counts when he appeared at the judicial center on recently.

However, he disputed one particular crime he was accused of, which was against a young boy.

The defendant was held in detention before a further hearing on November 28th.

'Candy game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, described the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She said his targets were under-privileged children who were attending a summer camp which he managed.

The man conducted a "sweet game" with the minors, the prosecutor explained, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and request they to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge the defendant had engaged in this activity with the children "over an extended period", and minors had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She said Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had suspicions in summer 2025.

The prosecutor stated further: "In the summer" his stepchild had worries about the situation, for good reason.

"They resolved" to investigate in the individual's items."

The prosecutor said materials including baby oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were located, and his stepson contacted the police about his concerns.

She stated the defendant proceeded to conduct the "treat game" with six boys that time - that Saturday - and they were all sick the following morning.

"The police had not responded by that stage," she added.

The oversight body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was examining law enforcement's management of the events.

The prosecutor explained the minors were struggling to walk due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson contacted the authorities a second time.

She said Ruben then played the "candy game" in a space of five children.
